After-school Youth Barbering & Mentorship Program in Mount Vernon, NYIn 2014, we created an after-school Introduction to Barbering program at Mount Vernon’s Amani Public Charter School. The school is located in an urban, low-income community which often means students are deprived of development opportunities and after-school programs found in affluent districts.
We initially offered the course to students in 7th & 8th grades. Before long, our program became so popular we expanded it to students between the ages of 13 and 17 years old. |
Developing real-world skills
Students in our after-school program don't just learn how to perform a haircut, they learn many of the business skills
that go along with becoming a successful barber.
We teach how to market one's brand and network amongst peers, providing them a unique understanding of creating
value in today's economy coupled with a highly respected trade skill.

Saving household disposable income
Students in the after-school program are provided their own barbering toolkits which they are allowed to take home — and families love it! With the skills they develop, students not only save their households the cost of bi-weekly haircuts, they also get the opportunity to practice what they've learned on family members while spending quality time bonding.
EligibilityOur after-school youth barbering program is recommended for student ages 13 to 17 years old. Everyone is welcome to join us, regardless of academic performance.
